If you have ever been told by others that you have a distinguished voice, then you may have thought of making use of that great voice in a professional way, as a singer, announcer or as a voice over talent. Adding your voice to a recorded message, such as a radio advertisement is called "voice over" - and can be an exciting and rewarding career for a trained individual. If you would like to get the training necessary to succeed as a voice over talent then here are a few steps to take.
Beginning a voice over vocation is an exhilarating and challenging time. It is important to keep in mind that in the commercial world all types of voices are welcomed: deep voices, rough voices, high whinny voices and even plain vanilla voices. So, even if you do not have a traditional "good voice" you can enter the field if you have resolve.
A voice over career is a fulfilling and challenging occupation where no two work weeks are ever the same. It is an occupation that many individuals would confess to enjoying. Yet it is a profession that demands much studying, instruction and training to become involved in. The best voice over actors make their job look simple - so simple that any person chosen off the street could do it. This is certainly not the case. If you wish to start a professional career as a voice over actor, there are many steps one must first take.
Here is what you should do.
1. Take Acting Classes. If you live in an urban area, it should be easy to find a suitable acting class. Enrollment is usually easily open to the public and affordable. Why acting classes? You need to know how to create the characters who 'speak" in a commercial. Just taking an animation class won't do it. You will need to learn this skill set from the very beginning. It's not about the voice, yet, it's about the intent beneath the voice that shapes the voice.
2. Take a Voice Over Class.Take Voice Over Instruction. After eliminating layers of defenses and bearing your soul in a good acting course; it will be time to become skilled at the mechanics and basics of voice over theory and instruction. If you live in a key urban market you should not have a problem finding serval options to choose from. Search online for reviews and descriptions before putting down your hard earned cash.
3. Practice - Practice - Practice. In addition to class, listen to any and every commercial on the TV and radio. Mimic them. Read magazine advertisements out loud as if you were reading ad copy in a sound studio. Recite memorized ad copy out loud as you are doing other mundane taks, such as driving or doing laundry or cooking.
4. Find your Area of Expertise. Once you have a solid grip on your instrument - your voice - you need to recognize what your range is and, by association, what your market is. Will it be the classic sports car voice, the slick game show voice, or the Joe Six Pack voice? The more characters you can communicate as, the more marketable you will become. Knowing all that you can do will help you with confidence and direction when promoting yourself.
Starting out with any new career can be a great time for new and exciting experiences. Getting paid to do something you love - such as professional voice over is icing on the cake.
