When selling your car the first thing you need to do is work out how much your car is worth and how much a buyer would be willing to pay for it. Have a look on local dealer forecourts for similar vehicles. Also check out a few car price guides to see how much they are valuing your car at. Some good guides are the parkers price guide, glass's auto guide and which guide. There are online versions of these or you can pay a couple of pounds for a hard copy in any good newsagents.
You may want to look at some car advertising magazines, many areas have a local free magazine so keep your eye out for one of these. Your local paper is always another good place to look for prices and also reasonably cheap to buy. When selling your car the mileage may be a factor, workout the average mileage of your vehicle and see if it is above or below. The age of the vehicle is also an important factor when selling.
Make sure you clean the car thoroughly inside and out before any viewings take place. Take a set of photographs of the vehicle from all angles in good lighting once you have cleaned it. Consider putting the vehicle through a service as well. Check that the vehicle has a valid MOT certificate and if it's is about to expire put it through another MOT. Few buyers will want the hassle of doing this and if you don't then expect this to reflect on the price you will be offered for the vehicle. You will also need to decide whether to sell the car privately or to a dealer. If you are dealing with a dealership then you will be offered less money than you would privately, dealerships need to make profits so will offer you lower than the book price value. Try to play one dealer off of another.
If you sell the vehicle privately you will get more money but this will be more of a hassle as you will have to make time for viewings and except phone calls. If any company contacts you claiming to act up on behalf of a buyer politely decline the offer, these companies charge an upfront fee and can not guarantee to deliver results. When showing the vehicle to potential buyers try to have a friend present. Never hand the keys over to anybody and never leave the car unattended. Ensure the potential buyer has adequate insurance before letting them take a test drive.
Never accept a check as payment for the vehicle. Also be very wary of bankers draft's, especially ones that are already made out for the price you originally advertised the vehicle for. To be absolutely certain accept a bank transfer or cash. If you do it except cash then arrange to meet in your bank or building society to count the cash and ensure the notes are genuine.
Auction sites are also a way to sell a vehicle but make sure you put a reserve price on the vehicle. Also ensure that you post adequate pictures so there are no disputes as to what you are selling or have sold. Once you have sold the vehicle do not hand over the log book simply tear off the part you need of the V5 document.
