Off road driving can be an exciting and fun experience if you know what you are doing and although four wheel cars can master difficult terrain they can also become stuck in a flat field of grass. This is why it is important that should you go off road driving you know what you are doing and how to control your vehicle. Here in this article we look at some basic essential tips to help you master the skill of driving on different terrains safely and confidently.
The starting point for anyone wishing to experience off road driving is to make sure that they understand their vehicle and are completely familiar with the controls. Some vehicles are permanently set in a four by four mode, whereas others have the option to switch from two to four wheel drive according to the terrain. For fuel economy alone is recommended to switch to two wheel for everyday driving, unless the weather dictates otherwise.
Driving up steep hills are the most common off road hazard that drivers should be aware of as they are the most dangerous. When travelling up a steep incline, make sure you drive in a straight line up or down a steep hill, check that there is a clear entrance at the top. Whilst driving select a low gear to be in, low ratio and use a short run to gain some momentum. Try to drive at a walking pace and no faster; this is the speed that is safest for off road driving. Once you get closer to the top be prepared for a loss of vision as the sky fills the windscreen on a steep incline. This is why it is important to check the terrain in advance.
Once you decide to return down the hill then you need to be in first gear, like going up make sure that you have checked the terrain first. Make sure that the hill is not so steep it will bury itself in the ground at the end. Take your feet off the pedals and let the engine breaking take you down the hill at a nice speed staying in a straight line.
Four wheel drive vehicles are usually good at dealing with water that is several feet deep, but always try to assess the firmness of the underlying surface before you cross. You should never drive through water quickly; a steady speed that creates a gentle bow wave is the best way. This minimises drag and avoids flooding the engine. Always remember to drive a short distance with the foot brake only lightly pressed on when leaving the water in order to restore breaking efficiency. Always make sure that if you are off road driving you are either with a professional or a professional yourself.
