The first place to start is to learn your basic chords. Learning your chords first, starting with the most basic ones will set you ahead of a lot of other players. Most classical music and pop music is made up from basic chords so being able to play chords will mean you are well on the way to playing classic tunes and songs that you know and love. Being able to play lots of songs you know is a sure fire way to make learning even more fun and help you make progress when learning piano.

Set yourself goals as we all know practicing is not the same as having goals, but having goals will improve your practicing. Having a goal isn't just repeating the same songs over and over, you need to set out what you want to achieve. For example, deciding learn a piece in a certain time by practicing then learning it again in a different key or playing it faster.
Play in a group or with friends, this really is one of the faster ways to improve your playing. Playing in a band or just jamming with friends helps everyone get over their fears of playing in public and instantly improves your timing. When you have other people to keep in time with you will quickly learn to play in time and just improve in general. It also has the bonus of being a lot more fun than just playing on your own.

Don't get hung up on the mistakes you make, instead just ignore the mistakes you make and play on. Its just a fact of learning that you will make mistakes, everyone does. The trick is to keep playing and retrying and to make sure you know where you went wrong and try and fix it. Don't stop playing or get upset. Play to the end and then retry the song after. Think about where you went wrong and try again.

Another great tip is to make sure you play with the right mental attitude. Practicing in the correct frame of mind will help you, the same as practicing while distracted will only make your practicing worse. Making sure you are focused on moving forward and learning well as well as having goals in mind that you want to achieve all with a positive attitude really help you when learning. Going through the motions and practicing because you think you have to will not get you anywhere or help this will just make you get bored and eventually give up. In a similar idea if you are trying to play on a bad day or after receicing bad news or after an argument then you should wait, and should not practice until later hopefully when you are calmer and less distracted. A distracted practice session will be less fruitful than one where you have a clear mind and goals. Try to find something that calms you down, for example have a bath or a walk or a cup of tea. If you can't calm down and can't get into the right frame of mine, perhaps you should skip that days session and try again on another day.Try setting mini goals, focus on making positive improvements such as learning a chord or a new song or a scale this will give you an idea of progress in a short time.
